The 2007-2008 school year has gotten off to a great start at the middle school! Our newest addition in the counseling office is the WEB program - a mentoring program for the 5th grade students. A group of 8th graders were selected as WEB leaders to serve in this year long program. After an energetic orientation day, the 5th graders participated in small group activities with their WEB leaders to help them meet other students and feel more comfortable at their new school. Since school has started, the 8th graders have served snacks to the 5th graders, decorated their lockers and been available to help welcome the 5th graders to RVMS. Our first social event of the year, the "Fabulous Fall 5th grade Fling" was held Oct. 29th. The 5th graders were treated to carnival games, food prizes, and pumpkin painting. Beginning in November, the 8th graders will also be teaching lessons in the 5th grade classes once a month on teamwork, study skills, respect and attitude.
We are also continuing to use the EXPLORE test with the 8th grade students. This test is a branch of the ACT test that is used for college admissions, The EXPLORE test, which will be given on Nov. 13th, will be used to give us an idea of how well your student is prepared for college in english, math, reading, and science. The EXPLORE test also uses information from an interest inventory to help us guide students to explore careers in which they may be interested. We will also be using this testing information to help your student plan his or her high school years when we start course registration in the spring.
Another upcoming event is Mix It Up at Lunch Day on November 13th. Mix It Up is a day where 5th and 6th grade students sit with a different group of students than usual to be able to get to know other students at school and help overcome some of the social barriers that we sometimes see. Students will be given fun activities and ice breakers to play during this lunch period that will be led by 7th grade students.
