GED/ABE Information

The GED is a high school equivalency diploma. It is a credential recognized as a key to
employment opportunities, job promotions and further education.

How do I get my GED?
To earn your GED diploma, you must meet or exceed the minimum standard score on each of a series of five tests.  The tests measure the major academic skills and concepts associated with four years of regular high school instruction.  The GED tests focus on Language Arts and Writing, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Math.

Who can take the tests?
Minnesota residents ages 19 and older who have not completed a high school diploma program and are not currently enrolled in classes leading toward a high school diploma may be able to take the GED tests.  The minimum age requirement to take the GED test is 19, however, the minimum age requirement may be waived under certain circumstances.

Is help available to prepare me for the test?
Classes for those who want to prepare for the GED examination are offered, at no charge, through Adult Basic Education.  Classes are small and informal and each person works at their own pace.  Classes are administered by licensed teachers.  One-to-one help in all of the five testing areas is available.  Participants will also learn test taking strategies to increase their test scores.
